Every March 17, millions of people around the globe don green and turn Irish. They march in parades, wear shamrocks, gather in pubs or simply get rowdy in honor of St. Patrick, who died on that day in the year 461.

St. Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century. Today, St. Patrick stands as a beloved figure in Ireland and as one of the world’s most popular saints.

St. Patrick’s Day was a minor religious holiday in Ireland until the 1970s, when Irish-Americans began marking the occasion in a big way. Now a major holiday, St. Patrick’s Day certainly gives us a reason to celebrate – but also a reason to be cautious. Among the dangers on St. Patrick’s Day are binge drinking and drunk driving.
